7th Day Diet
There is a growing curiosity about the Seventh Day diet (meaning the Seventh Day Adventist’ diet). There are a few misconceptions about it, with the first being that many people assume that the Seventh Day diet is a, well, diet. As in a 7 day diet, or a 3 day diet, or a cabbage soup diet, or similar. This is not the case as the Seventh Day diet is not intended for weight loss, but rather for over all health.
The reason for its growing popularity outside the Seventh Day Adventist Church is the result of a casual study that pointed to the 7th Day diet being one of the most healthy in the country. And in many cases it is, particularly when compared to the Standard American Diet (SAD).
The Seventh Day Diet is usually a vegetarian one, though this does vary between adventists, as they merely receive recommendations from the church’s nutrition board. This board makes it a focus to keep track of all of the newest and most reliable studies on nutrition and then boils it down to their dietary recommendations. While it may vary some, they have mainly based their recommendations on the USDA’s vegetarian guidelines. With many more studies coming out that show no link between saturated fat and heart disease, some of this stance may change in the coming years, but for now the diet mainly recommends a vegetarian diet with low fat dairy and occasional eggs.
Not all Seventh Day Adventists follow a vegetarian diet, however, as some are vegan and some do eat meat. All, however, try to eat conscientiously as good stewards of their bodies and of the earth.
It is good practice to question everything you hear, however, and not simply begin following a diet because you hear that it’s healthy. Always do adequate research, at least until you are satisfied in your own mind that the choice you’re making is right for you. Common sense should play a strong role in this. For my part, I’m joining the “Real Food” movement- which basically eliminates processed foods (including pasteurized dairy products as it so denatures the dairy that it is no longer the same food that it was to begin with) and purchasing and consuming more grass fed/pastured meats. This may not be right for you, however, and becoming aware of how your body feels and responds to various foods should allow you to eventually find your perfect rhythm.
