3 Day Grapefruit Diet

While also known as the Hollywood Diet and the Mayo Clinic Diet (not actually endorsed by the Mayo Clinic) the 3 Day Grapefruit Diet consists of eating high protein and high fat foods. The diet itself has been around since the 1930′s and through that time has been developed into many different variations although it usually lasts anywhere from 3 to 12 days and typically involves eating a lot of grapefruit. Supposedly grapefruit is supposed to contain a special enzyme that burns fat though scientific studies have proved otherwise thus questioning the actual power of the grapefruit.

It is generally recommended to eat half a grapefruit or to drink grapefruit juice with each meal while at the same time reducing caloric intake to the 800-1000 a day range. Considering this is such a low number of calories most believe that the reduced number of calories is the real reason as to why people lose weight instead of the grapefruit. The 3 Day Grapefruit Diet usually involves eating for a set amount of days, then taking a 2 day break and starting the diet over again if needed.

The 3 Day Grapefruit Diet is a fad diet which can typically be classified with the general rules of ruling out entire food groups, eating a high amount of anything fatty, sugary or high in cholesterol along with increased caffeine intake, lack of variety in foods consumed and certain food combinations touted to burn fat. As with most quick weight loss diets, participants tend to lose weight however that weight is usually just water. Water weight is easy to remove yet also very easy to gain back again just as quickly. Most people will lose the water weight and a few days later gain the weight back because the diet doesn’t actually burn any fat.

It is always advised to speak to your doctor ahead of time before starting any kind of diet as each person is different. Of course eating a healthy mix of foods and exercising regularly is arguably one of if not the best ways to successfully burn fat and stay healthy.
