This diet involves 3 days of strict eating, no exercise, and has dieters and experts on opposite sides of the fence about whether it works.  But before we get into the diets specifics lets take a look at the history of the 3 Day Cleveland Clinic Diet.

About the 3 Day Cleveland Clinic Diet:

Supposedly named after a diet plan created by physicians of the Cleveland Clinic this diet was meant to help patients lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days time in order to better prepare them for surgery.  However much like most of the aliases given to the 3 Day diet this in a falsehood.

The Cleveland Clinic, the American Heart Association, the Kaiser Permanente are all reputable healthcare organizations, clinics, and hospitals that have come out denying any association with this diet.  Each of them having a variation of the diet named after them like 3 Day American Heart Association Diet, and 3 Day Kaiser Diet for example.

The 3 Day Cleveland Clinic Diet is actually just an alias for the 3 day diet that was created in the mid 1980s as a fad diet.

What does the 3 Day Cleveland Clinic Diet Involve?

The diet plan itself is simple.  Eat these specific meals for 3 days and your body will have a “unique metabolic” transformation that will help you lose 10 pounds.

In reality the diet just provides you with a low calorie meal plan that will cut your food intake and you will experience no metabolic change.  The diet also advocates drinking a few cups of coffee a day, which will help reduce water weight inside your body and may be a part of your weight loss.

For those of you that do not know, coffee is a diuretic.  A diuretic is a substance that pulls excess water from your cells and makes you relieve yourself more frequently.  In laymen’s terms in makes you go pee more.  Drinking too much coffee is not good for you as it can dehydrate your body.  While completing the 3 day diet you should drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but be prepared for the diet to be less effective in terms of weight loss if you do because they authors of the diet are banking on the loss of water weight to reach the goal of 10 pounds.

Day 1

Breakfast Lunch Dinner
1/2 Grapefruit or Juice
1 Slice of Toast
1 tbsp. Peanut Butter
Black Coffee or Tea
1/2 cup Tuna
1 Slice Toast
Black Coffee or Tea
2 Slices (3 oz.) of any Meat
1 cup String Beans
1 cup Carrots or Beets
1 small Apple
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream

Day 2

1 hard-boiled Egg
1 Slice of Toast
1/2 Banana
Black Coffee or Tea
1 cup Cottage Cheese
or: 1/2 cup Tuna
5 Saltine Crackers
2 Wieners
1 cup Cabbage or Broccoli
1/2 cup Carrots
or Turnip Greens
1/2 Banana
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream

Day 3

Breakfast Lunch Dinner
1 hard-boiled Egg
1 Slice Toast
Black Coffee or Tea
1 Slice Cheddar Cheese
5 Saltine Crackers
1 small Apple
Black Coffee or Tea
1 cup Tuna
1 cup Carrots or Beets
1 cup Green Beans
or Cauliflower
1 cup Cantaloupe
or 1 small Apple
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream

Does the 3 Day Cleveland Clinic Diet Work?

Yes, you will see results. No they won’t last.  The diet says after 3 days to return to normal eating.  When you do this you will likely gain back all the weight that you lost. The diet is for short term goals and does not offer a long term nutrition or exercise plan which are the 2 keys to long term success.
